Academic Contests

Dr. Greensleeves : Friday, 8:00am
Test your ability to tell anxious mothers when they are due. Put your
Bovine Palpation teams knowledge of Bovine Theriogenology up against other
greensleeved individuals from around the country. Explore the sensation of palpating
bovine follicles, corpora lutea and embryos. Includes written and practical
theriogenology.
Competition guidelines: Two rounds
Round 1 Written test and palpation of bovine reproductive tract
Round 2 Palpation of live cattle
Teams: 3 members per team
Attire: Competitors must bring their own coveralls and rubber boots
Awards: First, second, and third place teams; First, second, and third
place individual
Trivial Pursuit : Friday, 1:00pm
In the SAVMA Challenge all categories are fair game. Its time for you to act like
real veterinarians and use all that knowledge crammed between your ears to earn a piece of
the great American pie. Pit your team against other veterinary school teams and compete
for the bragging rights of the most clinically competent school. Includes small, large and
non-traditional animal information.
Competition guidelines: In order for teams to compete,
each school must submit at least three cases pertaining to any one of the following:
companion animals, large animals, and non-traditional animal. Deadline for submitting
cases: February 1, 1999. Round robin, single elimination until final two teams. For more
details, refer to SAVMA constitution and by-laws.
Teams: 5 members per team

Finger Food : Friday, 1:00pm
Risk life and limb by sticking you fingers into what is essentially a small grinding
mill and then tell us the horse's age. The individual and team with the most fingers and
best approximation of the horses' ages wins! As an added bonus several of those
thingamajigs and doohickees used in equine dental care are asked
to be named (correctly).
Competition guidelines: Competition will consist of
identification and proper use (where applicable) of the following: dental anatomy,
eruption time, nomenclature, imaging diagnostics (radiographs, CT, etc), and
instrumentation. Competition will be history/case type scenario requiring a short answer
at each station.
There will be 15 stations per room (2 rooms)

Miscellaneous Parts, Bits, and
Pieces : Friday, 9:00am
Here's a chance for all you first year students to show off your knowledge of anatomy.
We have carefully selected assorted body parts to test your extensive knowledge of dog,
cat, horse, and cow anatomy. From the pudendal nerve to the vomeronasal organ - we have it
all.
Competition guidelines: 35-40 timed stations (1-2 minutes per
station). Teams of just freshmen are preferred. Team members will take exam in three
different shifts; no team members will be on the same shift. There will be a 10-minute
float period after each shift. Stations will consist of gross anatomy, histology slides,
kodachromes of gross anatomy, radiographs, and palpation of a live dog. Team members will
be asked to identify the specimen in each station within the time frame given.
Teams: 3 members per team (preferably freshmen)

Imagination Station : Friday, 10:00am
Black, white, and every shade of gray in the know universe are present in our
imagination station. Often referred to as imaginography, this contest puts your radiology
and ultrasonography interpretation skills to the ultimate test. Just imagine the fun as
you enter into this spooky world of black, white, and gray.
Competition guidelines: Radiographic slides of abnormal and normal
anatomy. Test will consist of brief case history, with short answer (e.g. diagnostic plan)
and multiple choice questions. In case of a tie, there will be 3 bonus slides.
Teams: 2 members per team

The Terminator : 9:00am
Be the only one to survive. In this individual competition use that huge medical
vocabulary to win more than Scrabble games - use it to win glory and honor for your
school! Both definitions and zany medical words will fly when your school enters this
academic contest.
Competition guidelines: Team members compete individually, scores
averaged for each team. Correct spelling and definition of medical terms. Oral exam or
written (undecided at this time).
Teams: 2 members per team

It's All in the Genes : Friday, 2:00pm
Identify breeds and their congenital defects in this off the wall but in the genes
contest. Show off your knowledge of breeds and work toward impressing clients by calling
their pure bred dog by its correct breed name. Contestants will also have the chance to
display their knowledge of congenital problems with different species.
Competition guidelines: 30 slides of dog and cat breeds (15 of each).
2 minutes/4 questions per slide. Each team member will take exam individually. Their
scores will be averaged for the team score. In case of a tie there will be 10 extra slides
(5 each of dogs and cats).

Your Pet is What?!? : Friday, 2:00pm
Veterinarians beware. Clients are coming up with more and more bizarre animals to keep
as pets. Put a team together and show off your talent as potential exotic veterinarians by
identifying, diagnosing, and treating these non-traditional pets. Be amazed by animals
with faces only a mother could love.
