Rules for Athletic Contests Ultimate Frisbee Tournament
Overview: None at this time
Rules
- One team allowed per school. Each team will have six players, plus alternates. There
must be even numbers of men and women playing for each side at all times.
- Match frisbees will be provided by WSU event organizers.
- A cointoss will be made prior to starting the match to determine possession. Team
winning cointoss has option to start with possession or defer to the other team.
- Match will begin when losing team pulls to the winning team i.e.
throws frisbee distance of playfield from end zone to confer possession. The
receiving team will start play from the point at which the frisbee is caught or picked up
(including inside the end zone). If frisbee leaves designated playfield on the pull,
possession starts where frisbee went out of bounds.
- Play is conducted by the player in possession throwing the frisbee to team members. When
in possession of the frisbee, a player is fixed in his or her immediate position. The
fixed position is the site at which the frisbee is caught or picked up by the player. He
or she may pivot on one or the other leg, but not both. One and the same foot must be
fixed in position with relation to the ground throughout the duration of the players
possession. No carrying of the frisbee from the point possession started will be allowed;
it is considered a foul.
- An opposing player may block the player in possession, but NO CONTACT may be made
between players. The blocking player is not fixed in position and may move about freely.
He or she may try to block throws, bat down, or grab the frisbee away from the player in
possession.
- The blocking player starts counting OUT LOUD, "one one-thousand, two one-thousand,
three one-thousand,
etc." at the start of blocking. The player in possession
has to the blockers count (as described above) of ten to throw the frisbee. If, at
the count of ten, the player in possession has not thrown the frisbee, possession changes
to the opposing team at the site of the foul. The blocking player may take possession at
that time or leave the frisbee on the ground for another member of his/her team to pick
up.
- A player from a team that loses possession may not pick up the frisbee from the ground
to establish possession until the team gaining possession has touched it at least once.
- Either team may call a foul at any point during the game at which a foul occurs. Fouls
include intentional or excessive player contact, movement of the fixed pivot
foot when in possession, or too much time taken to throw the frisbee. When a foul is
called, play stops immediately. The player calling the foul then explains the foul. If
both sides agree on the nature of the foul, the frisbee changes possession. If there is
significant dispute, teams can call a do over and restart play from the point
of the foul.
- Possession of the frisbee changes sides when the frisbee is dropped, batted down, caught
by an opposing player, thrown or caught out of bounds, after a point has been scored, or
following a foul.
- A point is scored when a player from the team in possession catches the frisbee while in
the designated end zone. Player must be inside the end zone or touching the line at the
time of the scoring catch. In the event of a one-foot touch, the in foot must
impact the ground inside the end zone, or on the line, before the other foot or any other
part of the player touches the ground out of bounds.
- After a point is scored, teams switch sides. The scoring team pulls to the
other team when both teams are set and ready.
- The game continues until one team reaches 9 points with a lead of at least 2 points or
the match time limit is reached. If the team with 9 points does not have a 2-point lead,
the match continues until a 2-point score difference or the time limit is reached.
- Tournament will be single elimination, with prizes awarded to first, second, and third
place teams.
