Wet Labs

Equine

  • Tendon Ultrasound in Horses - Dr. Russell Tucker, DVM, Dipl. ACVR. Short lecture followed by demonstratioin of techniques and hands-on experience evaluating equine limb anatomy via ultrasound.
    Materials: bring coveralls and boots.
  • Equine Bandaging and Casting - Dr. Marina Richter, DVM. A short discussion on pressure points in the equine limb, followed by hands-on bandaging on live horses and casting cadaver limbs.
    Materials: bring coveralls or scrubs.
  • Equine Teeth Floating - TBA. Basic teeth floating on horse head cadavers, with live horses used for comparisons. Equine teeth aging.
    Materials: bring coveralls.
  • Endoscopy and Trans-Tracheal Wash - Dr. Debra Sellon, DVM, Ph.D., Dipl. ACVS.
    Materials: bring coveralls, boots, and a stethoscope.
  • Video Laproscopic Trans-Rectal Palpation - Dr. Claude Ragel, DVM, Dipl. ACVS. Hands-on experience to visually see what you are transrectally palpating on live horses.
    Materials: bring scrubs and protective footwear (boots).

Small Animal

  • Doggy Dentistry - Dr. Veronika Kiklevich, DVM. Perform basic cleaning, scaling and tooth extractions on dog head cadavers. Use of different electronic scalers.
    Materials: bring scrubs.
  • Small Animal Echocardiography - Dr. Anthony Tobias, BVSc, MMeV, Ph.D., Dipl. ACVIM. A short lecture and echocardiography demonstration followed by hands-on echoing. We'll conclude with a case study.
    Materials: bring a lab coat, scrubs, and stethoscope.
  • Small Animal Acupuncture - Dr. Keri Fisher. A hands-on experience learning the basic acupuncture points. Live dogs will be used.
    Materials: bring a lab coat, scrubs, and stethoscope.
  • Introduction to Small Animal Ultrasound - Dr. Ronald Sande, DVM, MS, Ph.D., Dipl. ACVR. A short lecture, followed by a demonstration of techniques and hands-on experience evaluating different organ systems with ultrasound equipment.
    Materials: bring a lab coat, scrubs, and stethoscope.
  • Bandaging - Dr. James Lincoln, DVM, MS. Hands-on experience with application of the more common bandages used on small animals. Bandages will be applied to plastic dog limbs.
    Materials: none needed.
  • Helpful Hints on Neurologic Exams - Dr. Michael Moore, DVM, MS, Dipl. ACVIM. Learn how to perform basic neurological exams on small animals.
    Materials: bring a lab coat, scrubs, pen light, and stethoscope.

Exotics, Zoo, and Wildlife

  • Grizzly Bears - Dr. Charles Robbins, Ph.D. Visit our grizzly bear research center, learn how to prepare a dart, and learn how to dart a bear. Possible physical examination of a sedated grizzly bear and blood draw.
    Materials: bring scrubs and a lab coat.
  • Pet Bird Handling and Physical Examination - TBA. Learn how to correctly handle and perform physical examinations on pet birds. Learn how to determine age, clip wings, and draw blood.
    Materials: bring a lab coat, scrubs, and stethoscope.
  • Llama Care - Dr. Patrick Long. Perform basic physical examinations on the llamas in our herd.
    Materials: bring a lab coat, scrubs, stethoscope, pen light, and boots.
  • Reptiles: Handling and Physical Exam - Dr. Erik Stauber, DVM, Ph.D. Perform basic physical exams, learn basic handling skills, and learn the anatomy of common pet reptiles.
    Materials: bring a lab coat, scrubs, and stethoscope.
  • Rabbit Ovariohysterectomy and Castration - TBA.
    Materials: bring a lab coat, scrubs, and stethoscope.
  • Raptor Handling and Physical Exam - Dr. Erik Stauber, DVM, Ph.D. Learn how to handle and perform physical exams on the different raptors we have in house. *Prerequisite lecture friday morning, "Raptor Handling and Physicals".*
    Materials: bring a lab coat, scrubs, and stethoscope.

Agricultural Animal

  • Bovine Palpation - Dr. Steve Parish, DVM. Hands-on bovine rectal palpation involving anatomy of the reproductive system.
    Materials: bring coveralls and boots.
  • Dystocia and Calf Pulling - TBA. Perform rectal palpation to determine dystocia and learn how to correctly pull calves.
    Materials: bring coveralls and boots.
  • Hoof Trimming - TBA. Learn how to correctly trim bovine hooves. Hands-on using bovine limbs and comparing it to live cows. Experience in evaluating lameness.
    Materials: bring coveralls and boots.
  • Embryo Splitting and Sexing - TBA. Hands-on experience learning how to split embryos and determine the sex of embryos with micromanipulator, PCR, and gel electrophoresis.
    Materials: bring a lab coat.

Special Topics and Fish

  • CPR and Emergency Procedures - SVECCS.
    Materials: bring scrubs and a stethoscope.
  • Necropsy of Fish - Dr. Tom Baldwin, DVM, Ph.D. Learn the basic anatomy of fish by performing necropsies.
    Materials: bring coveralls or scrubs.
  • Diagnostic Application of Magnetic Resonance Imaging - TBA. Tour of the MRI facilities.  Look at our MRI machine and our linear accelerator. Watch a demonstration of the MRI.
    Materials: bring a lab coat.
  • Necropsy Show and Tell - Dr. Charles Leathers, DVM, Ph.D., Dipl. ACLAM. Perform necropsies and learn the proper samples to send to diagnostic laboratories to get the results you desire.
    Materials: bring scrubs or coveralls and protective footwear.
