April 13-14, 2011 (Wednesday – Thursday)
Sponsored by the CVM Teaching Academy (steering committee)

Dr. Nicole Roberts, PhD: Dr. Roberts has been
working in education since 1987 and in medical
education since 2000. After receiving her
doctorate from the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign in 2005, she joined the faculty
of Southern Illinois University School of
Medicine as an Assistant Professor of Medical
Education and the Director of the
Academy for Scholarship in Education. Her
research interests include identification and
management of learners with clinical performance
problems, outcomes of medical education, and
teaching in non-classroom settings. |
PROGRAM
WEDNESDAY:
8:10 - 9:00 AM:Keynote Presentation: “Outcomes Assessment 101”
Throughout education, whether it be K-12 or higher ed, teachers are being
expected to prove that their students are actually learning. It is no longer
sufficient that students are just being “taught”. This is particularly important
in the modern “regulatory environment” where loss of accreditation and funding
are potential consequences of non-compliance. However, outcomes assessment
programs have the potential to document achievements as well as identify needs.
Ideally, the ultimate goal is to help educators improve what they are doing to
produce graduates who are prepared for the real world. In this 50 minute
seminar, Dr. Roberts will provide an overview of Outcomes Assessment – including
a discussion of how using outcomes data from students’ clinical experiences
should feed into efforts to improve the pre-clinical curriculum.
9:30 - 11:00-ish AM: Seminar and Discussion: “Real Time Assessment in the
Workplace”:
In our college’s recent accreditation review, the AVMA COE identified a lack
of direct, formative, mid-block assessment in 4th year clinical rotations as a
shortcoming we are required to address. In the first 30-40 minutes of this
session, Dr. Roberts will discuss the differences between direct and indirect
assessment – using a model of daily verbal feedback versus formative assessment
(documented, focused on improving performance in the immediate future and
generating useful programmatic data) versus summative end-of-rotation
assessment. She will focus on formative assessment methods that many CVM faculty
have suggested seem most sustainable in our environment because they fit closely
with what clinicians are already doing. In the remainder of the session, Dr.
Roberts will answer questions and facilitate a discussion relative to our own
program. We will discuss methods of gathering data from direct assessments, the
importance of using that data to drive strategic change, and some examples of
how these methods could help our faculty/program. Reference:
