This is an image of the ileum, which is a segment of the small intestine. The finger-like projections are intestinal villi. Like microvilli, villi increase the surface area of the intestinal mucosa (epithelium) for absorption. Microvilli, however, are surface modifications of the epithelial cells themselves.
