The two neutrophils in this image are pretty sad, but the basophil in the center of the image is nice. Generally, the basophilic granules will obscure the nucleus. The slight acidophilia present near the center of the cell is the nucleus. Because these cells were stained with Wright's stain instead of H&E, the nucleus appears more acidophilic than what we expect with H&E.  Basophils are rare in the peripheral blood (<1% of all leukocytes), and an increase (basophilia) does not generally occur without a concurrent increase in eosinophils (eosinophilia). Click on the basophil for a close-up.
