The omentum has been tucked up out of the way. Most of the loops of intestine that you see is the jejunum of the small intestine. Just like the thoracic cavity, the abdominal cavity is lines by a simple squamous epithelium (mesothelium) known as the peritoneum. The portion of the mesothelium that is on the body wall is the parietal peritoneum, and that which surrounds the organs (or viscera) is the visceral peritoneum. Remember that the parietal peritoneum is continuous with the visceral peritoneum by way of the mesentery, and we name that mesentery by the segment of intestine it suspends from the body wall (such as the mesoduodenum and mesocolon). |
