The Eye [ image 1 ] [ image 2 ] [ image 3 ] [ image 4 ] [ image 5 ] [ Eye Review ] Label A is on the two cut ends of the orbital ligament. The pin is located in a glandular structure (B) that was partially covered by the ligament. This structure is the lacrimal gland. What is secreted by the lacrimal gland, and what are the components of this secretion? (answers below) The lacrimal gland is primarily responsible for the aqueous layer of the tear film. The superficial gland of the third eyelid also contributes to the this layer. The oily layer, which retards evaporation of the aqueous layer, is produced by sebaceous glands in the eyelid margin (Tarsal glands). Goblet cells within the conjunctiva produce the glycosaminoglycan layer of the tear film, which helps bind the tear film to the cornea. Click on the image or the image 5 link to remove the eye. |
