Muscles of the Hip and Thigh [ Up ]
[ image 1 ] [ image 2 ] [ image 3 ] [ image 4 ] [ image 5 ] [ image 6 ] [ image 7 ]
This is a cranial view of the left thigh. Dorsal is up and medial is left. The cranial belly of the sartorius muscle (A) has been transected, and so has the biceps femoris muscle (B). The vastus lateralis muscle (C) has been partially transected in the right image. The rectus femoris muscle (D) has been transected in the right image to exose the vastus intermedius muscle (E). The vastus medialis muscle (F) is also in view. The quadriceps femoris muscle consists of the vastus lateralis, vastus intermedius, vastus medialis muscles and rectus femoris muscles. I expect you to be able to identify the individual muscles of the quadriceps femoris muscle. The quadriceps femoris muscle is innervated by what nerve and has what general action? Only one of the quadriceps femoris muscles acts to flex the hip - which one is it? The sartorius muscle and the muscles of the quadriceps femoris are innervated by the femoral nerve. All of these muscles extend the stifle (the caudal belly of the sartorius, not seen, flexes the stifle - see its distal attachment in image 6). The rectus femoris muscle is the only one of the quadriceps femoris muscles to flex the hip. The sartorius muscle also flexes the hip. |
