This is an example of severe chronic laminitis.
As the name implies, laminitis is inflammation of the laminae. With inflammation, the
laminar epithelium separate from the hoof wall, causing "rotation" of the digit
by the weight of the horse and the pull of the digital flexor tendons. The dotted lines
indicate the approximate orientation the hoof wall should be in reference to the third
phalanx (notice in images 1&3 that the hoof wall is parallel to P3).
