Growth occurs within cartilage from mitotic division of the chondrocytes buried in the matrix. This is known as interstitial growth. The parent and daughter cells, which are in close proximity, are known as an isogenous group (at arrow). The daughter cells, which are chondroblasts, produce more matrix. Bone growth does not occur in this manner.
