Large Intestine (colon)    [back]

I hope you can appreciate the lack of villi in this image. The colon, like the small intestine, is covered by a simple columnar microvillus epithelium. The large round clear epithelial cells are goblet cells. Why might we see an increased number of goblet cells in the colon?
