Although we did not dissect the cranial and caudal gluteal nerves, I want you to know the muscles innervated by them.

The lateral thigh muscles, which include the superficial gluteal muscle (A), the middle gluteal muscle (B) and the underlying deep gluteal muscle (not shown), and the tensor fasciae lata muscle (C) are innervated by the gluteal nerves. The most caudal of these, the superficial gluteal muscle, is innervated by the caudal gluteal nerve. The middle gluteal muscle, deep gluteal muscle, and the tensor fasciae lata muscle are innervated by the cranial gluteal nerve.

The tensor fasciae lata muscle is the odd ball in this group, as it flexes the hip and extends the stifle with the other cranial thigh muscles.

The gluteal muscles, as a whole, act to abduct and extend the hip.
