Sacral and Caudal Vertebrae

Up Cervical Thoracic Lumbar Sacral, Caudal

Although the pelvis is present in these images, we will wait and look at it with the hind limbs. In the dog, the sacrum (A) consists of three fused vertebrae. Notice

how in the dog the dorsal spinous processes fuse to form the median sacral crest (location of the label).

I do not care if you call the vertebrae of the tail coccygeal or caudal vertebrae (B). I find "caudal" a lot easier to spell and pronounce.

From this dorsal view, notice the attachment of the wings of the sacrum (C) to the ilium (D).

E is the pelvic symphysis...do you remember what tissue makes up this symphysis?

Yes, it is fibrocartilage!
