Structures: A. Corpus callosum; B. Hypothalamus (the hypothalamus is divided by the 3rd ventricle); C. Thalamus; D. Pineal gland; E. Rostral colliculus; F. Brainstem; Cerebellum: G. Arbor vitae; H. Folia; What are the functions of the thalamus, hypothalamus, cerebellum, rostral and caudal colliculi? (scroll down for answers, but only after you have tried to answer the question yourself) Spaces: I. Mesencephalic aqueduct, which joins the 3rd and 4th ventricles; J. Fourth ventricle. These spaces contain cerebral spinal fluid in the live animal.
The thalamus is the relay station of the brain - all sensory except smell passes through the thalamus before heading to the cerebral cortex. The main function of the hypothalamus is homeostasis - it controls the endocrine and autonomic nervous systems. Review your notes for the specifics of this. The cerebellum is responsible for orienting the body and moderating body movements. The rostral colliculi are involved in visual orientation and reflex responses, such as blinking or orientating the eyes and head toward an abrupt visual stimulus. In a similar way, the caudal colliculi are involved in auditory reflex and orientation responses. [2nd Saggital cut]
