The cells of the matrix overlying the dermal papilla give rise to the medulla. The matrix cells over the lateral margin of the dermal papilla give rise to the cortex. The inner root sheath is said to be continuous with the stratum corneum, while the outer root sheath is continuous with the stratum germinativum of the epidermis.
