Tracheal rings are made of hyaline cartilage and are very important to supporting the structure of the trachea. Think of how hard it would be to breath if the trachea was not supported as it is. Some animals have a congenital (i.e., they are born with it) or acquired defect where the trachea collapses, resulting in respiratory distress. Cartilage rings and respiratory epithelium are present to the level of the bronchi in the lungs, but are not present in the bronchioles.
