The trachealis muscle is smooth muscle. Its functions to narrow the tracheal lumen. You may ask, "Dr. Wilson, why would we want a narrowed tracheal lumen?" Well, when you cough, the norrower the trachea, the faster the air moves and can propel whatever is making you cough out of the trachea.
