O. Lynne Nelson, DVM, MS
Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine
(Internal Medicine & Cardiology)
Dr. Nelson obtained a Bachelors degree in wildlife biology from Auburn University
before pursuing a career in veterinary medicine. She received her DVM from Auburn
University in 1989. After four years in private practice, she traveled to Iowa State
University to enter a combined residency program in internal medicine and cardiology.
Following completion of the residency programs, Dr Nelson joined the faculty at Iowa State
University as an Assistant Professor. She spent last year in a private specialty practice
in Tucson, AZ. Dr. Nelson is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal
Medicine in both Internal Medicine and Cardiology sub-specialties. She has authored
several scientific articles. Dr. Nelson recently joined Washington State Universitys
College of Veterinary Medicine as Assistant Professor in Cardiology.
Dr. Nelsons special interests include myocarditis, heart failure therapies, and
cardiac dysfunction in chronic pulmonary disease.
Cardiology Procedures/ Diagnostics offered at WSU: Dr. Nelson will
predominantly see small animal patients but will also evaluate other species, including
horses and some exotic patients such as ferrrets.
- General cardiovascular evaluation: complete cardiovascular examination, chest
radiography, electrocardiography, blood pressure measure
- Echocardiography: (2D, Mmode, spectral and color Doppler, and contrast imaging)
Occasional stress testing, Digital storage and archiving echo exams
- Holter monitoring: 24 hour ECG obtained via a backpack worn by patient
- Cardiac catheterization: for diagnostic information, obtaining pressures and/or
performing contrast studies for complex heart diseases and congenital anomalies.
- Interventional procedures: Balloon dilation valvuloplasty, pacemaker placement,
percutaneous balloon pericardiotomy

- Degenerative valvular disease
- Primary myocardial diseases (hypertrophic, restrictive and dilated cardiomyopathy)
- Congestive heart failure patients
- Congenital anomalies
- Breeding certification exams (for breeds with suspected inherited disorders)
- Arrhythmias/ Syncope/ Episodic weakness
- Infectious valvular and myocardial diseases
- Tumors of the heart and great vessels
- Pericardial disease
- Heartworm disease
- Right heart syndromes/ Pulmonary hypertension (secondary to any lung disorder)
- Systemic hypertension
