2006 Jerry Newbrey Teaching Scholars  posted Jan 2007    (award details)

The designation of "Newbrey Teaching Scholar" is awarded for excellence in teaching during the first 3 years of the veterinary curriculum. It is awarded to faculty who, according to the CVM's standardized student evaluations, score in the top 20 percentile of the college on the query "Rate the instructor." For consideration as a Newbrey Teaching Scholar, a faculty member must: {a} teach at least 10% of a course in the core curriculum, (or have at least 6 contact hours), and {b} receive standardized evaluations from at least 50% of the veterinary students enrolled in the course. The Newbrey Scholars are recognized each spring for achievement in the previous calendar year.

Terry McElwainDr. Terry McElwain, executive director of the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, has been presented with the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Animal (APHIS) Administrator’s Award for 2006. The award recognizes an individual out-side of the federal government who has made outstanding contributions and pro-vided notable service, and is recognized as a pioneer or leader in an area relating to animal agriculture.

Dr. Timothy Baszler has been awarded the 2006 American Association of Veterinary Diagnosticians Award for Best Manuscript in the Journal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation. He was the lead author of a multi-institute comparison of two automated immuno-histochemical procedures for the diagnosis of scrapie in domestic sheep and chronic wasting disease found in North American white-tailed deer and mule deer.
Dr. Guy Palmer is elected to Institute of Medicine posted Oct 2006
Dr. Guy Palmer, a veterinary pathologist at Washington State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, has been elected to membership in the National Academy of Science's Institute of Medicine (IOM). Election to this prestigious body is one of the highest honors for those in biomedical research and human health care. Full Story

Dr. Henk Granzier receives the Pfizer Research Award posted Oct 2006

  The College of Veterinary Medicine Research Committee has selected Dr. Henk Granzier as this year’s recipient of the Pfizer Research Award. Dr. Granzier is a faculty member of the Department of Veterinary and Comparative Anatomy, Pharmacology, and Physiology (VCAPP). Dr. Granzier’s leadership and collaboration with colleagues and other laboratories has resulted in a better understanding of muscle function from the molecular level through actual force and movement.

Dr. Claude Ragle, an equine surgeon was presented with the 2006 Distinguished Service Award by the American Association of Equine Practitioners. The Washington State Veterinary Medical Association (WSVMA) Awards Committee presented the following awards during their honors banquet September 30th in Yakima, Washington. October 2006

  • WSVMA Faculty Service Award: Dr. John Gay, Associate Professor, VCS FDIU.
  • WSVMA Distinguished Achievement Award: Dr. Clive Gay, Professor Emeritus, VCS FDIU.
  • Washington Veterinarian of the Year: Dr. W. M. Bayly, Dean of The College Of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. James Krueger is presented with the 2006 Distinguished Scientist Award at the Sleep Research Society June 2006

James M. Krueger, Ph.D., a professor of neuroscience at Washington State University (College of Veterinary Medicine, Department of VCAPP), was presented with the 2006 Distinguished Scientist Award at the Sleep Research Society's June 2006 annual meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Distinguished Scientist Award is the highest award presented by the society. Given annually since 1898, it is presented for significant, original, and sustained contributions of basic, clinical or theoretical nature. Details


Dr. Douglas R. Call was named the Caroline Engle Faculty Fellow March 2006

This is a three-year award that recognizes Doug Call’s research accomplishments.


Dr. Henk Granzier is awarded a Helmholtz Humboldt Award posted May 2006

This is a joint award from the Helmholtz and Humboldt Foundations to "internationally acknowledged" scientists from abroad and requires integration of work into a German research university.

Wescott Clinical Scholars for 2005 - 2006 posted May 2006

The 2006 recipients of the Wescott Clinical Teaching Scholar recognition have been selected by this year’s graduating class. The designation of “Wescott Clinical Teaching Scholar” is awarded to faculty for excellence in teaching during the final (fourth) year of the veterinary curriculum. All faculty who teach during the fourth year are listed on a ballot which is divided into three categories: (1) Small Animal Medicine and Surgery, (2) Large Animal Medicine and Surgery, and (3) Diagnostics/Services. Seniors vote for 5 faculty members including at least one in each category. The top six, including the top in each category, are designated as Wescott Clinical Teaching Scholars.

The Class of 2006 is pleased to announce that they have chosen Dr. Patricia Talcott as this year’s recipient of the Carl Norden Distinguished Teacher Award April 2006

Dr Patricia Talcott This award is given by Pfizer to the outstanding teacher in the College of Veterinary Medicine as selected by the fourth year class. Dr. Talcott has received this award three times (1995, 2002 and 2006). Dr. Talcott is currently an Associate Professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine, Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Lab (WADDL)

 

Dr. Terry McElwain awarded the Outstanding Alumnus Award by the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State Feb 2006

Terry McElwain Terry McElwain was recently awarded the Outstanding Alumnus Award by the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University. The award was presented to Terry by Dean Ralph Richardson of KSU at the Western States Veterinary Conference.
 

Congratulations to Dr. Steve Hines on his appointment as the Berger Keatts Distinguished Professor  posted Jan 2006
 

The College of Veterinary Medicine recently appointed Dr. Steve Hines as the inaugural Berger Keatts Distinguished Professor.  This professorship was created with a bequest from the late Dr. Berger Keatts to recognize and support excellence in teaching in the WSU CVM. The College is fortunate to have many truly outstanding teachers and there were a number of very worthy nominees submitted by departmental Chairs.
