Announcements

Please read the announcements each time you login. The announcements may contain additions or corrections to the notes or technical issues.

Which web browser to use

You may use either Internet Explorer or Netscape to view the lectures participate in the discussion forum and to take the examination and complete the evaluation.

If you are using an older version of a browser you may experience technical problems. To check the version of the browser, click on the Help menu at the top right of the web page, then select "about..."

Voice-annotated slide shows

In order to hear the voice annotated slides you must: (information below on downloading software)

  • have a sound card and speakers attached to your computer
  • have the Flash Movie Player installed on your computer

The voice lectures are large files and therefore their performance is influenced by the speed of your Internet connection. We provide the lectures in several sizes with the largest having the best quality sound but the slowest to load and the low version having lower quality sound but the fastest to load.

The sound files load in pieces, a process called streaming. With slow connections you may not be able to jump ahead in the lecture if the slide you want to jump to is not yet loaded.

Select the resolution that sounds the best on your computer without the sound files "skipping".

If you connect to the internet via 28.8 modem you may want to select the "low" resolution show. If you have a faster modem or a DSL, cable modem or Ethernet connection you should be able to use the "high" resolution files.

You may select a different resolution by returning to the start page for the course.

If even the low file is slow to play on your computer, consider opening the file, then walking away for 20 to 30 minutes. This allows the entire file to load and it will play faster.

Controlling the lecture

There are 2 styles of lectures represented by images A & B below.  They are controlled with slightly different controls.

A.

Diagram of the different objects to help navigate through the Lecture notes

You can sit back and let the movie play or you can manually "page" through the lecture by pressing the previous and next arrows on the movie controls.

You can jump to a specific slide by clicking on the name of the slide from the drop down list.

The blue indicator bar will advance as the movie is played so you can see how much of the slide show has played.

The movie controls allow you to step back and forth through the slide show, pause and play and rewind to the beginning of the show. Hold your mouse over each arrow on the movie controls to show a yellow "tool tip" describing what task each arrow performs.

Movie controls

1. rewind to the first slide
2. go back one slide
3. pause the movie
4. play from this slide forward
5. go forward one slide

Participating in the discussion forum

Instead of individual questions being asked of the instructor, you will ask questions and make comments to the instructor and the group of participants in a discussion forum. The discussion forum will be open during the 2 weeks that the course is open. The instructor will  respond within 48 hours on weekdays. Participants may respond to questions as well.

To open the forum, click on the discussion forum link at the left of a page. To view questions and answers that have been posted, click on View Forum. To ask a question or make a comment, click on Post Message. To respond to a message open the message by clicking on the subject of the message, then click on reply. Using reply rather than post message will indent the next message to group messages on the same topic into a "thread" making it easier to follow a specific topic.

When you are viewing a message you can go back and forth between messages using the next and previous message buttons. The next and previous thread buttons will skip any indented messages and display just the unique topics (any message that is at the left margin of the list (not indented).

You can search the forum using its search feature.

Your question or comment will be identified with your email address although you may elect to post the question anonymously.

Some courses will contain an email link to the instructor rather than a discussion forum. Most on-demand courses do not include the ability to ask questions but will include questions and answers asked in earlier offerings of the course.

The examination (not applicable to courses for animal owners)

A  multiple choice or short answer test will be posted during the second week of the course. The completed test must be submitted no later than 5 pm Pacific Time, 2 weeks after the end of the course. A score of at least 65% must be achieved to be granted CE credits.

Getting continuing education credit (not applicable to courses for animal owners)

Subsequent to passing the examination with a score of 65% or higher you will be awarded continuing education credits.  NOTE: It is the responsibility of each participant to determine if online courses are accepted for CE credit by their State Licensing Board.

1. Every time I move from one screen to the next I have to login again

You must allow your browser to accept cookies. If you disable cookies you will be prompted to login each time you change screens.

2. I lost the movie that was playing

The movie plays in a second copy of your web browser (a new window). Depending upon your computer settings, the movie window may be smaller than the "notes and lectures" web page. If the movie disappears it has probably been "pushed" behind another window. Look for the name of the movie on the gray bar at the bottom of the screen (the task bar) and click to bring the movie to the front.

3. The movie won't play

You probably don't have the Flash movie player installed. Click on the Macromedia logo to get the player.
