: This webpage is not current (note the link check date), due to the lack of time is only updated sporadically and needs a lot of work! Since I started this page (pre-Google!), the web, web tools and use of the web have evolved to make things much easier to find.Note
Note: If you know a word in the title or URL, use your browser's "Find" function (usually under "Edit" on the toolbar) to jump quickly to and through those titles or URLs containing that word. For searching PDF files using Adobe Acrobat, the search function is under "Tools".

This list is selected to provide entry points to the Web for veterinary students and practitioners to find veterinary-related information and to give you an idea of what is available on the Web. Most important are those sites that function as sifters and collectors of links ("Jump-off Points") to other sites that actually have the information. A problem with such sites is that unlike a library of physical materials, websites of electronic materials rapidly change, move, disappear, reappear and are reorganized on computer operators' whims. Increasing numbers of dead links and "URL not found" are returned messages as the site ages. More and more materials are being placed on the web every day; some are excellent. These are sites that I have tripped over while surfing with search engines or have been listed elsewhere. I have visited each one at least once to take a quick look at its content but have not audited these sites for what I consider to be correct information nor do I endorse anything contained in these sites. This is not by any means an exhaustive list and some gems are likely missing! Absence of gems is an oversight on my part.
If a link off of a directory site has something useful, "bookmark" it so you can find it again. If it is really good, either print a copy or save a copy of the html file to disk to preserve it. If something disappears, try using one or more of the search engines (remember that different engines give different results) with some of the unique terms in the document (e.g. document ID numbers, authors names, key technical terms) to find the document at a different location. Try trimming the right ends off of the "Not Found" URLs back to the next "/" to see if you find an index to the site or other clues. Using this technique, you often can find other useful materials on a site with a good hit.
Remember that you must judge Internet information even more carefully than print information. Anybody can publish anything on the Internet, often without any filtering by editors, publishers, or reviewers that occurs for most print media. All they have to do is establish their own site.
To increase the utility of this list in the printed form, the URLs are not hidden. Within each section, most sites are listed alphabetically. Use your browser's "find" function to find occurrences of words in the following list. If I linked you to the middle of a site, it is because I didn't see a good pointer from the home or index page to the "good stuff". If you find useful sites that I should consider listing, find any that I should remove from this list or find broken links, please let me know.

Farm Family Conflict Resolution:
Conflict in farm families between siblings and between generations over farm management and inheritance issues is very common, occurring in a majority of farm families. Because veterinarians are often caught in the middle of these painful conflicts, Ive included these on-line resources from several cooperative extension services. These sites have additional materials. Files with "*.pdf" require Adobe Acrobat to read, which is free for downloading.

Farm Family Mental Health: (draft)
Because of market uncertainty and factors beyond the producer's control, modern livestock agriculture is becoming a more intense, uncertain livelihood undergoing rapid change. In the face of widely fluctuating, uncertain commodity prices, both short and long term risk-taking may require literally "betting the farm." Unforeseen changes in market conditions may change previous investments from a sure thing to high risk. Because of the nature of the relationship between the veterinarian and the producer, veterinarians are often in a position to recognize when the mental stress from this pressure is overwhelming an individual or a family and may be leading to disaster and tragedy. To assist veterinarians in this situation, Ive included these on-line resources from several cooperative extension services. These sites have additional materials. Files with "*.pdf" require Adobe Acrobat to read, which is free for downloading.

Personnel Management and Training
Veterinarians are increasingly involved in employee training and supervision, particularly on larger enterprises in the dairy, feedlot and swine industry. In many cases, the success of veterinary programs on these large operations depends upon the successful training and motivation of the employees involved in the specialized aspects of these operations that have major impacts on animal health, such as calf raising, milking time hygiene, fresh cow management and feedlot treatment.

Selected Veterinary Medical Mailing Lists: (abstracted from NetVet)
Note: Many of these lists are very active and will bury your e-mail unless you set them to the "digest" mode. In this mode, the listprocessor program sends you all the messages that arrive during one day packaged into a single message once a day instead of sending you each message individually. The disadvantage of the digest format is that to reply to a specific message, you have to enter the subject to maintain the thread. Also, you can reply to the originator alone only by entering their e-mail address. To get instructions on how to do this or other list instructions, send a message to the listserver program address (not the list address itself) with only the word "help" in body.
For example, to set AABP-L to the digest mode send LISTSERV@UMDD.UMD.EDU a message with only "set AABP-L DIGEST" in the text. Note that this address is different from the AABP-L address, which is AABP-L@UMDD.UMD.EDU. Anything sent to the later address is automatically broadcast to all subscribers rather than acted on by the list server program.
AABP-L American Association of Bovine Practitioners Discussion Group - a forum in which AABP members may discuss techniques, materials, and issues related to veterinary medicine in cattle. Subscription and archives are restricted to members of the AABP. To subscribe, send an e-mail message to: AABP-L@UMDD.UMD.EDU and in the body of the message, enter: subscribe AABP-L Firstname Lastname. Contact: OWNER-AABP-L@UMDD.UMD.EDU for help with AABP-L. For information on listserve commands, send a e-mail message to LISTSERV@UMDD.UMD.EDU with the word help in the body. For information on the AABP and on joining, see the AABP homepage or e-mail AABPHQ@aabp.org. Information on AABP-L, including all the commands, is available at http://www.aabp.org/HomePage/aabpl.htm.
