Purpose of this List:

This list is selected to provide veterinary students, graduate students and practitioners useful leadership, communication, knowledge mapping and construction, critical thinking and grant-writing resources on the Web. This is not by any means an exhaustive list and some gems are likely missing! Absence of gems is an oversight on my part; if you find one, please let me know so I can add it! To increase the utility of this list in the printed form, the major URLs are not hidden. If you find useful sites that I should consider listing, find any that I should remove from this list or find broken links, please let me know.

Why this list?

Because communication skills are very important to professional success in all areas of the profession. Ilene Gipson in Jump Start: What to Do Before Writing a Grant Proposal:  "Although the most important skill required in building one's career in the sciences is developing and pursuing good ideas, in my opinion the second most important skill is communication. Effective verbal and written communication skills are absolutely essential in developing a career in the sciences, and emphasis should be placed on developing these skills early during the training process - something many scientists tend to overlook in the excitement of pursuing their research goals."

On-Line Public Speaking Resources:

Much communication occurs as the spoken word and most of these words are spoken in public, whether speaking to colleagues, to employees, to seminars, to clients or making presentations at large gatherings. As with most skills, practice is required to obtain proficiency.

One of the best forums for practice of public speaking are local clubs associated with Toastmasters International, a volunteer organization dedicated to improving these skills and to overcoming the fear of public speaking. Toastmasters International provides to members instructional manuals for different types of speeches; these have been developed and tested over several decades. Clubs are organized in many communities and usually meet weekly for approximately one hour. At a meeting, several members give 5 to 12 minute speeches based on guidance of the manuals and several other members practice extemporaneous speaking in other roles (e.g., table topics, speech evaluation) for the meeting organized and run by the meeting chair, the toastmaster of the day. The goals are for members to improve public speaking, effective use of time, leadership abilities and to gain confidence in these abilities. No, it is  not a brand of household appliance, is not for pontification, pomposity, verbosity, or other excessive displays and it is nothing to do directly with the consumption of liquid spirits. The mission of a Toastmasters club is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every member has the opportunity to overcome their fear of public speaking and to develop communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth.

On-Line Humor & Quote Resources:

An appropriate bit of humor is an excellent way to win an audience over at the beginning of a talk or to re-engage them in the midst of a long talk. Good, appropriate, subject-relevant humor is hard to find. A good quote that capture a great deal of wisdom very succinctly can serve as the central of a presentation or drive home a point.

Concept Mapping :

Initially described in the book by Novak, JD, DB Gowin (1984). Learning how to learn Cambridge University Press, concept mapping is based on the premise that humans remember images of the relationships between complex concepts better than word descriptions of these relationships.

 On-Line Learning Resources:

Although students in professional curriculums and graduate programs are by selection already accomplished learners, most likely have never considered what we know about how the human mind learns, what is known about the cognitive process, how to enhance it and how people differ in how they learn. The purpose of this section is to provide access to this information, an understanding of which will likely increase learning performance, particularly for long term recall.

The object of teaching is not so much to convey knowledge as it is to excite a determination in the student to acquire it for himself, and to teach him how to go about it. Sir Alec Clegg

Cooperative / Collaborative / Problem-based (PBL) Learning:

Cooperative or collaborative learning are approaches to learning designed to increase understanding and long term retention. These methods have been shown to markedly increase student retention. Problem-based learning is a special subset of these techniques. Although designed to be implemented by the instructor, there is no reason that a significant component of these techniques can't be implemented by students outside of the traditional classroom setting.

Twelve Lewinian Principles of  Experiential Learning (After Johnson & Johnson, 1987, p. 18-20)

  • Principle 1. Effective experiential learning will affect the learner's cognitive structures (action theories), attitudes and values, perceptions and behavioral patterns.
  • Principle 2. People will believe more in knowledge they have discovered themselves than in knowledge presented by others.
  • Principle 3. Learning is more effective when it is an active rather than a passive process.
  • Principle 4. Acceptance of new action theories, attitudes, and behavioral patterns cannot be brought about by a piecemeal approach - one's whole cognitive-affective-behavioral system has to change.
  • Principle 5. It takes more than information to change action theories, attitudes, and behavioral patterns.
  • Principle 6. It takes more than firsthand experience to generate valid knowledge. Besides experience, there needs to be a theoretical system that the experience tests out, and reflection on the meaning of the experience.
  • Principle 7. Behavior changes will be temporary unless the action theories and attitudes underlying them are changed.
  • Principle 8. Changes in perceptions of oneself and one's social environment are necessary before changes in action theories, attitudes, and behavior will take place.
  • Principle 9. The more supportive, accepting, and caring the social environment, the freer a person is to experiment with new behaviors, attitudes, and action theories.
  • Principle 10. In order for changes in behavior patterns, attitudes and action theories to be permanent, both the person and the social environment have to change.
  • Principle 11. It is easier to change a person's action theories, attitudes, and behavioral patterns in a group context than in an individual context.
  • Principle 12. A person accepts a new system of action theories, attitudes, and behavioral patterns when he or she accepts membership in a new group.
