Production Medicine Papers and Out-of-Print Books - 1998
EARLY DRAFT
Updated October 18, 1999
Contents:
Introduction:
This is a list of basic production medicine resources that have been
published in journals, serial publications or in books that are out of print.
"VMR" indicates that the material is located in the reserve section of the
Veterinary Library. If you find papers that aren't listed but should, find papers listed
that shouldn't be (e.g., too out of date), or find mistakes in citations, please let me
know at jmgay@vetmed.wsu.edu. This list was
assembled by rapidly scanning titles in electronic databases where an accidental extra
mouse click would jump blocks of potentially relevant articles.
Before departing veterinary school, begin creating a library of
relevant species material that will be more difficult to obtain when you are in practice.
Also begin learning how and where to locate new materials. As experts have pointed out,
much of this material is not be part of the veterinary curriculum and cannot be mastered
for even a single species during veterinary school. As will be the case in practice,
mastery requires dedicated self-motivated, self-directed self-instruction.
Three unique methods to identify current papers are Free MEDLINE: PubMed and Internet
Grateful Med (The National Library of Medicine literature database, including
abstracts, selected from most but not all veterinary journals, published since the late
1960's) and the Cornell
Consultant: A Diagnostic Support System for Veterinary Medicine. Because Consultant is
strongly disease oriented, it does not include many production relevant publications if
they don't directly relate to a disease. For publications not indexed by MedLine, such as
the AABP Bovine Practitioner and Annual Meeting Proceedings, see the University
of Montreal Veterinary Library Veterinary
Table of Contents and Veterinary Conference Proceedings for issue-by-issue table of
contents since 1994.

Veterinary
Clinics of North America: Food Animal Practice:
This Veterinary Clinics series are important books for bovine clinical
practice, each issue containing multiple clinically relevant review papers on a clinically
important area, such as a specific disease. The most economical way to obtain the
Veterinary Clinics of North America is to subscribe to the series beginning with the date
of the first issue that you want (providing it isn't out of print). Subscribing is one
third the price of buying individual issues. You should subscribe. Indexed by Free MEDLINE: PubMed and Internet
Grateful Med, Veterinary Table of
Contents and Veterinary Conference Proceedings, and CAB VetCD.
Anderson, KL, ed. (1993). Update on Bovine Mastitis. The
Veterinary Clinics of North America: Food Animal Practice 9(3):421-620. Nov 1993.
ISSN 0749-0720. WB Saunders. (VMR).
If you intend to enter dairy practice, read this issue because it
covers many aspects of mastitis, one of the most important economic problems on dairys.
Chapters include economics of the disease, bulk tank monitoring, udder hygiene, machine
function evaluation and the influence of nutrition.
Gardner, CE, ed. (1989). Dairy Practice Management. The
Veterinary Clinics of North America: Food Animal Practice 5(3) Nov 1989. WB Saunders.
(VMR)
Although becoming dated, this issue contains several chapters relevant
to dairy production medicine. Most of the chapters were written by well known dairy
practitioners practicing dairy production medicine in the east and mid-west. Example
chapters:
- Herrick, JB. Marketing dairy practice. 457-469.
- Nelson, AJ, HW Redlus. The key role of records in a production medicine practice.
517-552.
- Nordlund, KV. Developing the production medicine practice. 501-515.

Herds. The Veterinary Clinics of North America: Food Animal Practice Mar
1994 10(1):1-185. . WB Saunders. ISSN 0749-0720 (VMR)
If you intend to enter cow-calf practice, read this issue because
perinatal mortality is one of the biggest causes of economic loss to cow-calf producers.
- Toombs, RE, SE Wikse, TR Kasari. The incidence, causes, and financial impact of
perinatal mortality in North American beef herds.137-146.

The Veterinary Clinics of North America: Food Animal Practice July 1991 7(2):311-632.
WB Saunders. ISSN 0749-0720 (VMR).
This is an excellent, veterinarian-oriented book on dairy cattle
nutrition, including chapters on rumen function, carbohydrates and protein nutrition. Some
of the information may be getting a bit dated with the development of better prediction
models, with the advances in nutrition monitoring such as NEFAs and MUNs, and with the
more recent findings on prevention of hypocalcemia. Below are some example chapters.

Compendium on Continuing
Education (Selected Papers):
The following are selected papers relevant to production medicine listed approximately
in the order of publication. The pagination of this journal is difficult to follow as
sometimes papers are split with other papers or sections. Many of the papers appear in
special supplement sections paginated differently from the main sections of the journal
but interspersed with it. Or I may have made a typing error. This journal is not currently
indexed on Medline but is indexed in CAB VetCD, although not consistently. For example,
using "Compendium in SO" will not pull up all the Compendium articles. Also, see
Veterinary Table of Contents and
Veterinary Conference Proceedings.
(Note - seriously incomplete and rough - at this point the selection is by
title and/or author's name alone.)

Applied
Farm Management / Economics:
Familiarity with the applied economics aspect of farm management is
absolutely essential to the successful practice of production medicine. Without a working
understanding of this material, you cannot evaluate the "bottom line" effect of
different production medicine interventions, which ultimately are the most important
effect from the client's perspective. You need to have at least an intuitive understanding
of the concepts of costs and returns (fixed costs, variable costs, marginal costs,
marginal returns), the principles of partial budgeting, net worth statements, budgets, and
the time value of money. At best, you need to be able to evaluate the economic
consequences of different alternatives and at minimum such evaluations by others.
Out-of-print books, such as Osburn and Schneeberger's Modern
Agricultural Management and Castle, Becker and Nelson's Farm Business Management may be
available from used bookstores.

Applied Nutrition:
The successful practice of production medicine requires a solid
understanding of applied nutrition. You must know what production diseases or problems
result from inadequate nutrition, how to evaluate rations for those problems, and basic
steps necessary to correct and prevent these problems. Expertise beyond that level is
beneficial because feed comprises the largest proportion of variable costs of food animal
production and the ability to minimize those costs can be financially rewarding for the
practitioner. Beyond the skills of traditional individual animal clinical medicine, this
is the single most important area.

Forage Production:
Forages, either harvested or grazed and either purchased or raised, are
fundamental to ruminant agricultural animal production. Livestock farms are essentially
fiber and concentrate conversion systems. You need to understand the basics of how forages
are managed from growing to harvesting to storing to mixing to delivering and the
consequences of mis-management of this process.

Animal Production
Systems:
You must understand the fundamentals of any animal production system
that you work with. If you are not already very familiar with a system, one of the best
ways to obtain that understanding is by reading a textbook that is intended for applied
upper level animal science classes.

Housing,
Facilities and Environment:
In intensively managed and housed animals, housing and its operation
(waste handling, sanitation, and ventilation) have tremendous impacts upon animal health,
welfare, and productivity. For all animals, successful production medicine practice
requires facilities in which animals can be rapidly and efficiently handled in a manner
safe for both the animal and the handlers. Environmental management and particularly waste
management is becoming crucial in animal agriculture.

Internet Information
Sources:
Advances in electronic communication, primarily the development of the
Internet, is changing how veterinarians access and exchange information. Instead of being
isolated from your fellow practitioners, you can rapidly communicate with others that have
the same practice interests that you do.
Information services, such as VIN and AVMA NOAH, were created expressly
for veterinarians by veterinarians. As an example of services, these companies host forums
where practitioners post their questions on-line and consultants answer them on-line.
List servers are systems that broadcast any message sent to the server
to all of those who are subscribed. Subscribers are usually people with common interests
from around the world. Some lists require that you have certain qualifications or that you
are a member of the sponsoring organization before you are allowed to join. NetVet
<http://netvet.wustl.edu/> maintains a list of list servers related to veterinary
medicine and the instructions on how to subscribe to them. Examples relevant to production
medicine are Dairy-L and AABP-L. To avoid being buried by messages on an active list,
knowledge of the "digest" command is most important. The digest function sends
the messages to you in a block rather than one at a time.
Internet Websites contain information posted by the Web Master of the
site, which is located at a particular URL (uniform resource locator) Being electronic
addresses, URLs are often changed when the host computer changes. Websites contain all
sorts of information from company product information to course notes at universities.
These sites can be accessed with internet web browsers such as Netscape Navigator, Mosaic,
or Unix Lynx and can be found with Internet search engines such as Yahoo or Webcrawler.
See WWWeb Sources for Agricultural Animal
Veterinarians.
Most faculty at most veterinary schools are available by e-mail. Its
much easier to send a message that the recipient can respond to when they have time rather
than playing phone tag. However, those who choose not to respond to e-mail messages even
though they have e-mail addresses, you will have to catch at the phone anyway.
