Sustainable Agriculture Information Links & Resources

Initial 5/05/04 Updated 05/11/08

Purpose:

The purpose of this webpage is to provide veterinarians, students, livestock producers and consumers links to materials on the complex and inter-related issues impacting agricultural resilience, sustainability and food security. As many of these issues are controversial because they involve public policy decisions impacting major stakeholders, often with competing interests and opposing positions, and infrastructures on local, national and international scales, my intent is to include materials from all sides of such issues. Although I've tended to focus on the more science-based academic, government and NGO on-line and print  materials, these materials are not screened for veracity or position but listed because the site or source appeared that it might contain useful information.  Material appearing in the scientific refereed literature that is not publicly accessible on-line is not included as it is identifiable through bibliographic databases such as PubMed and ISI's Web of Science. As government entities are involved, much of their associated literature is "grey", meaning that it is not identifiable through the traditional literature databases. As many of these issues are controversial and the blog phenomenon is very active, I link the more interesting, relevant in-depth posts that I happen to run across.  Materials are organized approximately alphabetically under headings or subheadings but as growth is by irregular incremental additions (punctated evolution?) as I explore varying issues over time and my understanding develops and changes, the organization tends more toward chaos than order. In other words, it's a mess. I cannot vouch for the accuracy or usefulness of these on-line materials. Please let me know of useful materials and links that I've overlooked or of errors that I've made (no spaces in -  j m gay at wsu dot the usual educational suffix).

Issues of Varying Agricultural and Food Security, Sustainability and Resilience Concern & Controversy:

  • Economic Globalization
  • Emerging Infectious Agents, Parasites
  • Global Climate Variability, Change
  • Genetic Diversity - Invasive Species, GMO's, Extinction
  • Increasing Petroleum Scarcity, shift to Biofuels
  • Regional Human Population Expansion
  • Regional Soil Depletion, Salinization
  • Regional Fresh Water Scarcity

Contents (Major Headings):

As this is a collection in progress, I apologize in advance for omissions, misinterpretations and general disorganization chaos, which includes section to section inconsistencies.
