***Test of choice for hepatocellular injury in small animals***
- A cytosolic enzyme (found in the cytoplasm and released into the plasma when hepatocytes are damaged). The plasma half-life (t 1/2) is 2-3 days in dogs.
- Hepatic ALT activity in large animals is very low, so it is of little diagnostic use in these species.
- ALT may increase dramatically in dogs following vehicular trauma with no evidence of hepatic disease.
- Administration of glucocorticoids and anticonvulsants may cause induction of ALT.
