***Widely used in large animals to detect liver disease***
- A cytosolic and mitochondrial enzyme released due to changes in cell membrane permeability or cell death.
- AST occurs in almost all cells, but is used primarily for liver and muscle disease diagnosis because its activity is highest in these tissues. Always evaluate AST in conjuction with CK levels.
- AST has high sensitivity for liver disease, but low specificity.
- Because AST is present in RBCs, hemolysis may cause a rise in AST.
