Indications for performing this test:  This test is an important piece of baseline data for diagnostic work up in most clinical cases, particularly in companion animals and horses.  It is also very useful in monitoring the progress of treatment protocols.  Biochemical panels are used less commonly in food animals where the cost of the test must be weighed against the value of the animal.

These are the tests included in a typical serum chemistry profile for small animals at the WSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital.  Panels will vary between laboratories, and it is important to remember that normal ranges will vary too.  Always assess normal values relative to the normal values provided by the institution that is performing the test.
