Phosphorous (P)

structure

Indications for performing this test:  This test is included in a standard biochemistry profile.  Phosphorous is a useful indicator of the functional status of the renal system as well as the calcium, phosphorous, and vitamin D system.

Phosphorous functions to buffer many of the body fluids and is important in the formation of bone as well as calcium regulation.  Phosphorous is regulated by the kidneys and Parathyroid hormone.

Young, growing animals have increased phosphorous due to the constant growth of their bones.

Interpretation of serum phosphorous levels:

Hyperphosphatemia

  • Renal failure
  • Secondary Hyperparathyroidism
  • Young growing animals
  • Hypoparathyroidism
  • May elevate slightly with healing fractures
  • Hemolysis in vitro
  • Phosphate enema, especially in cats

Hypophosphatemia

  • Milk fever (Cow)
  • Primary hyperparathyroidism
  • Neoplasia
  • Hyperinsulinism
  • Hypercalcitonin
  • Inadequate dietary intake
