Indications for performing this test:  This test is included in the standard serum biochemistry panel and is useful in determining the acid base status of an animal when used with other acid base values.

    Total carbon dioxide is an estimate of the bicarbonate present in the blood.  TCO₂ is comprised of 96% bicarbonate, 4% H₂CO₃ and CO₂  .  A complete blood gas analysis is required to fully evaluate the acid base status of a patient.  Don't over-interpret a single total carbon dioxide value on a serum biochemistry profile.
