Indications for performing this procedure: Abdominal radiography is commonly performed for evaluation of the abdomen in small animals. Survey abdominal radiographs may reveal diseases and pathologic processes within the abdomen. However, it is important to recognize the limitations of survey abdominal radiography for the detection of disease. Survey radiography is performed for the identification of the location, size, shape, margination, and radiopacity of all abdominal viscera. The inherent contrast within the abdomen is a result of the differentiation between soft tissues and variable amounts of abdominal fat. In addition, the GI contents often have a natural contrast which allows recognition, such as air, ingesta, and fluid filled intestinal loops. Usually two views of the abdomen are obtained, including a ventrodorsal view and a lateral recumbent view. When indicated, contrast agents can be administered to outline specific structures within the GI tract.
