Thoracic Radiographs

Indications:  Survey radiographs of the thorax are often requested for evaluation of the lungs, heart, pleural space, and thoracic esophagus when clinical signs indicate possible pathology of these structures.  Examples of clinical signs that warrant thoracic films include dyspnea, chronic coughing, exercise intolerance, ascites, regurgitation, and abnormal heart and lung sounds.  When neoplasia is suspected, thoracic radiographs are often performed to evaluate whether metastasis to the lungs has occurred.

Thoracic films are commonly obtained in ventrodorsal and lateral recumbent views.  Radiographs are obtained during peak inspiratory phase to maximize visualization of the air-filled lung in contrast to the soft tissues.
