Total body water is 60 -70% of body weight (up to 80% in neonates)

2/3 of total body water is intracellular

1/3 of total body water is extracellular

1/4 of extracellular water is in blood vessels (plasma)

3/4 of extracellular water surrounds cells and in locations such as bile and CSF

Blood volume dog: 40/ml/lb (8-9% body weight)

Blood volume cat: 30 ml/lb (5-6% body weight)

Insensible H20 loss: 1/2 ml/Kcal/day  (10-15 ml/lb/day)  hypo-tonic respiratory loss

Urinary H20 loss: 1/2 ml/Kcal/day (iso-tonic loss)

Urine output: 12-20 ml/lb/day

Net basal H20 loss: 1 ml/kcal/day (20 -30 ml/lb/day - sensible and insensible combined)

Average caloric requirement for adult dog with normal activity: 20 - 30 kcal/lb/day

Fever insensible fluid loss increases by 7% for each F° of  fever

H20 intake: 20-30 ml/lb/day (includes free water and water in foods)

Canned pet foods are up to 70% water

Basal requirement:  Na, K, Cl 0.02 mEq/Kcal/day

Dehydration is initially extracellular fluid loss

Minimal detectable dehydration 5-7% body weight lost as water

Shock: fluid loss of 12-15% body weight lost as water

Fluid replacement: 500 ml/lb deficit, 1000 ml/kg

Tissue catabolism in anorexic patient: 0.1-0.3 kg/day/1000/Kcal

Glucose, fructose supply 4 Kcal/g

Ethanol 5.6 Kcal/g

Glucose rate 0.5-0.9 g/kg/hr

150 non-amino acid calories provided for every gram of amino acid

Replace 80% of H20 deficit and maintenance and contemporary losses in lst 24 hours

Potassium rate; 0.5 mEq/kg/hr

Standard drip 10-20 drops/ml

Pediatric drip 60 drops/ml
