Note:
Virginia Morell is a contributing correspondent for Science, a
regular contributor and member of the Expeditions Council at National
Geographic, and a regular contributor to Smithsonian.
She has written for the New York Times Magazine,
Discover, and Natural History magazines.
In addition to her many articles, she has written two books:
Ancestral Passions: The Leakey Family and the Quest for Humankind's
Beginnings (Simon & Schuster 1995; this was a New York Times
Notable Book of the Year), and Blue Nile (National Geographic,
2001), about an expedition she joined that traveled the length of the Blue
Nile from the source in Ethiopia to the Sudan border (this was a San
Francisco Chronicle Best Travel Book).
She also co-authored with Richard Leakey Wildlife Wars (St.
Martins, 2001), about Leakey's efforts to stop the elephant poaching in
Africa (this was a Washington Post Best Book of Year).
Ms. Morell is currently working on a new book about animal mind and
cognition (an expansion of the her article "Minds of Their Own" that
appeared in the March 2008 National Geographic).
