Animal Resources Unit
The Animal Resource Unit is a service unit under the office of the Dean.
It is advised by the College Animal Resources Committee. The committee
consists of one faculty member from each of the college’s three departments.
The Director of Administrative Services serves as an ex-officio member.
Responsibilities
ARU’s responsibility is to house, maintain and monitor the care of
animals used in teaching and research programs at the College of Veterinary
Medicine. ARU maintains one 23,000 square foot laboratory animal vivarium in
Bustad Hall, plus 34 large animal and support facilities at various
locations on the east side of campus. ARU also provides management and
maintenance for 250 acres of pasture land on the Pullman campus.
AAALAC accredidation
The college animal care program is accredited by the Association for
Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) and
has maintained accreditation since November 1990 and is site visited every
three years by AAALAC. The animal facilities receive unannounced site visits
from U.S.D.A Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), Regulatory
Enforcement and Animal Care (REAC) personnel to insure the animal care is in
compliance with Federal regulations. Also, the University Veterinarian and
his staff monitors the animal care on a monthly basis.
Budget
Budget support for the animal care program is provided by per diem
charges. These rates are reviewed annually, and adjusted as necessary. Per
diem ratescover the cost of basic care only (standard diet feed, labor, and
bedding). Management funding and maintenance funding for land, vehicles,
equipment and maintenance personnel is provided by state funding. (See the
Internal Site for price schedules).
