Introduction to Veterinary Science
Degrees Offered: M.S., Ph.D.
The College of Veterinary Medicine offers the Master of Science
(M.S.) in Veterinary Science and the Doctor of Philosophy
(Ph.D.) in Veterinary Science. The College encourages
specialization in some field of veterinary science. Examples of
areas of specialization are anatomy, anesthesiology, physiology,
pharmacology, toxicology, microbiology, pathology, immunology,
internal medicine, clinical pathology, radiology, on medicine.
The M.S. program is designed to provide broad training in the
specific aspects of veterinary science and related disciplines
in order to prepare students for careers in teaching, research,
and service. It is a research oriented program emphasizing the
acquisition of theoretical understanding of a field and or
research skills in preparation for additional education
(doctoral) or a career in teaching and research.
The objectives for the Ph.D. level training are to prepare the candidate
for a career as an independent investigator (i.e., can compete for NIH, NSF
and USDA grants as the principal investigator). In the combined
residency/Ph.D. programs, the candidate will also gain experience and
competence sufficient to qualify for board certification in a desired
veterinary medical specialty. The methods for achieving the Ph.D. training
objectives are:
- Didactic course work including biochemistry, molecular biology,
physiology and statistics. A total of 72 semester hours including
research and thesis of which 34 hours must be graduate-level course work
are required. Research training:
- Major professors have pre-existing extramurally funded research
programs to which the graduate student associates.
Major professors and committee members have successful track records in
training students.
- Trainees are encouraged to publish their research work not only in
traditional veterinary journals, but in other high quality journals
(e.g., Science, Nature, Proc. Natl., Academy of Science, J. Virology, J.
Reproduction Fert., J. Immunology, J. Neurobiol., Neuroendocrinology,
Am. J. Phys., Equine Exercise Phys., J. Appl. Phys., Biol. Reprod.)
