Chocolate may be ready to go home soon
Chocolate, a stray Chesapeake Bay retriever from the Tri-Cities has
nearly completed his recovery at WSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine. A
second surgery to repair persistent problems in his front left leg has been
deemed a success, and Chocolate’s care team at WSU believes they are close
to having him ready for placement in a permanent home.
Since his surgery, Chocolate has been involved in a variety of
rehabilitation exercises, including some stretching, walking outside when
it’s nice, and chasing his now famous yellow ball. “Our team has been
working hard to give Chocolate the best chance of success,” said WSU’s
veterinary orthopedic surgeon Dr. Steve Martinez.
Chocolate had been seen running as a stray in south central Washington,
despite suffering from multiple fractures and dislocations to both front
legs. Over a period of months, good Samaritans tried to coax the injured
dog to them so they could seek care. A local resident was able to capture
the dog and get him to a local veterinarian in early February who then
referred him to WSU’s teaching hospital.
