Alpaca Mom Bonds with her Cria
Rosie is a first-time alpaca mother who needed a
little help learning how to be a mother. The first 24 hours after birth is
crucial for a newborn cria (baby) to absorb antibodies from the colostrum
(first milk) of the mother.
Rosie and baby were monitored hourly to make
sure that baby was nursing. The following day a blood test was performed on
baby to confirm that she had obtained antibodies from her mother which will
help protect her from certain diseases. Test results were positive and the
pair was sent home.
