Airline Travel Information

Participants who have confirmed their attendance at the AVMA VLE, (through their completed on-line registration form), should:

  • Arrange air travel itinerary and enter itinerary information at the AVMA VLE registration link (blue pawprint) to complete your registration.

We request that you provide us with your air travel itinerary as part of a centralized travel database for each participant’s arrival and departure at Spokane International. This facilitates our greeters knowing who to expect on each flight throughout the day to assist in directing you to the hotel shuttle, as well as to facilitate an efficient return to the appropriate airline counter on Sunday, June 8.

  • Plan to arrive in Spokane, WA on Tuesday, June 3 by 4 p.m., Pacific Time.

  • Plan your departure from Spokane as soon AFTER 12 noon, Pacific Time, Sunday, June 8, as is feasible.

We will shuttle people to the airport throughout the day on Sunday to minimize waiting time at the airport. The first bus to the airport will be at 10:00 to accommodate people with 12 to 1:00 o’clock departures. The second bus is tentatively scheduled for noon, but may be adjusted to accommodate actual participant departure times. The airport is about a half-hour from Ross Point.

  • Those traveling from outside the United States will need the appropriate documentation to clear Customs.

Your participation in the AVMA Veterinary Leadership Experience should prove to be an extremely valuable part of your ongoing professional development. We are looking forward to seeing you in Spokane!

Ground Transportation

Ground transportation from Spokane International to the Red Lion at the Park will be provided by Red Lion Hotel shuttles. You will be met at the baggage claim area by WSU veterinary students who are serving as greeters. They will assist you in getting to the hotel shuttle. Transportation from the Red Lion at the Park to Ross Point Conference Center and from Ross Point back to Spokane International will be provided.

Lodging

The night of June 3, you will be staying at the Red Lion at the Park in Spokane, http://redlion.rdln.com/.  You will have a room, either single occupancy or with someone from your school, assigned to you. You will not need to make your own room reservation, as that will be done automatically as a result of your registration.

On June 4-7, you will be sharing rooms at Ross Point Conference Center, http://www.rosspoint.org/

This facility has an assortment of lodging arrangements from hotel-style rooms to rustic cabins. Ross Point can accommodate up to 80 people in hotel-style rooms that host either two or three to a room in separate beds. Though the cabins are designed to house twelve, we will limit the number per cabin, based on registration. The cabins contain cots with bare mattresses, necessitating occupants to bring a sleeping bag, as well as a pillow and towels. All lodging facilities are heated with showers complete with HOT water and electricity. We will fill the hotel style rooms with faculty, sponsors, and students traveling from beyond the mainland United States.

Contact Susan Seaman at sjseaman@vetmed.wsu.edu  if you are a student from the mainland United States and staying in a cabin is not feasible for you. You will know your lodging assignment prior to your departure.

Meals are served family style in the dining room. Please indicate dietary needs or restrictions as part of your AVMA VLE registration.

What to Bring

  • Casual clothes & hiking shoes – you will be outside much of the time. Participants in the past have opted for jeans or shorts and casual tops. If you feel inclined to not wear jeans or shorts at our opening banquet on June 3, slacks will be fine.
  • Sunscreen, insect repellent, toiletries
  • Optional supplies you may wish to bring are a flashlight for walking around Ross Point after dark, camera, and swimsuit, beach towel, and/or watersocks. The water temperature in the lake is less than tropical in early June, so swimming will be your personal choice. An appetite for s’mores would also prove useful.
  • Jacket or sweatshirt – it will get chilly in the evenings, especially while we are out on Lake Coeur d’Alene for the evening cruise.

Internet Access

The Red Lion and Ross Point will have an Internet kiosk available for all guests as well as wireless service. The wireless service at Ross Point is spotty. Signal strength is best in the lodge. Signal strength in individual rooms varies.

Emergency Contact Information

  • Red Lion at the Park, Spokane, WA 509-777-6300
  • Ross Point Conference Center, Post Falls, ID 208-773-1655
  • Cell phone service at Ross Point is very good

The Dinner Cruise

The cruise scheduled for the evening of the 7th will depart from the Coeur d’Alene Resort in Coeur d’Alene, ID. The CDA Resort is about ten minutes from Ross Point. We will bus there to board the boat and cruise around the lake during dinner. To get an appreciation for the beauty that awaits you as well as an idea of what these tour boats look like, please check out the resort website at www.cdaresort.com, click on “Activities,” then select “Our Cruise Fleet.”   After the cruise, we will have the opportunity to return to Ross Point or to remain at one of the CDA Resort lounges or walk around downtown Coeur d’Alene to patronize one of the local establishments.  Busing back to Ross Point will run about once an hour until midnight.
