Zoonoses Research Unit (ZRU)
Our
Mission
As a part of the National Food and Water-borne Diseases
Integrated Research Network established and supported by the
National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases within
the National Institutes of Health, and in collaboration with WSU
College of Veterinary Medicine’s Field Disease Investigative
Unit, Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, and
departments of Veterinary Clinical Sciences and Veterinary
Microbiology and Pathology, the WSU Zoonoses Research Unit
conducts research on specific food- and water-borne zoonotic
diseases in an effort to improve food safety for everyone.
Unit Goals
-
Study zoonotic agents such as Salmonella,
E.coli and Listeria, including
their antibiotic resistance and their
transmission among animals and from animals to
people.
-
Develop an emergency response plan for
dealing with the possibility of extraordinary
zoonotic events like the threat of bioterrorism
or massive national outbreak of a disease such
as avian flu.
-
Collaborate with other Washington State
agencies, including the Public Health Laboratory
and the Department of Ecology, in surveillance
for emerging infectious diseases.
