John Mattoon

John Mattoon DVM, Diplomate ACVR

Dr. Mattoon graduated from the Washington-Oregon-Idaho (WOI) Program in 1984. Following two years as a small animal practitioner in Portland, Oregon, he began a radiology residency at the University of California, Davis, earning Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Radiology in 1989.

Dr. Mattoon worked as a specialist in the San Francisco area before beginning his academic career at Oregon State University in 1991. He was an Associate Professor at the Atlantic Veterinary College before joining The Ohio State University in 1999, where he served as the section head of radiology until his return to Washington State University in the summer of 2006.

Dr. Mattoon has been an advocate for the advancement of veterinary imaging sciences through teaching, research and service. He has been honored with two Norden Distinguished Teaching Awards, The Merck AgVet Award for Creativity, and most recently the Faculty Clinical Teaching Award presented by residents from Ohio State. He has served the American College of Veterinary Radiology in various positions for many years and currently holds the position as President of the ACVR.

While enjoying all aspects of clinical radiology, Dr. Mattoon is perhaps best known for his interest in diagnostic ultrasound. He is co-editor and author of the textbook Small Animal Diagnostic Ultrasound, published in several foreign languages. His research interests include the clinical use of ultrasound, ultra-high frequency ultrasound and ultrasound contrast agents. He is co-investigator on a Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation grant to study the application of targeted solid nanoparticles in breast cancer research. Dr. Mattoon also has a special interest in pulmonary imaging. Dr. Mattoon has over 50 scientific publications and has presented at nearly 100 veterinary meetings in the US, Canada and Australia. He serves on the American Journal of Veterinary Research Board of Scientific Reviewers and reviews scientific manuscripts from a number of popular veterinary journals.
