Specific Research Areas

My interests are mechanisms of cardiac failure and cardiovascular adaptations. I have been involved in a number of clinical projects regarding cardiac disease in systemic and pulmonary hypertension.

My current investigations include: heart chamber adaptations in congestive heart failure and in hibernating mammals (collaboration with WSU Bear Conservation and Education Research Facility). The exact mechanisms and consequences of cardiac adaptation in hibernating bears are yet to be fully elucidated. Understanding mechanisms and responses of the heart during naturally occurring hibernation could yield insight into the mechanisms of cardiac function regulation in various disease states in non-hibernating species. In addition, understanding the mechanisms of hibernation may yield useful treatments options providing we can learn to mimic this state of myocardial adaptation.
