Research activity and interests:
My research interests are in animal transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) and bovine protozoan abortion cause by Neospora caninum.  Objectives for TSE research include development and validation of diagnostic assays, and investigating mechanisms of genetic resistance and prion conversion.  Current studies focus on development of ruminant cell culture systems to study prion infectivity, transmissibility, and cellular genes involved in prion conversion.  Objectives for bovine neosporosis research are directed towards immunology and vaccine development.  Current studies focus on development of DNA and peptide-based subunit vaccines of parasite surface antigens that induce cell mediated immunity that reduces or prevents transplacental parasite transmission, fetal infection, and abortion.
