  Food Safety and Zoonoses

Program goals

Identify and resolve problems due to important food safety agents at the farm level by research in animal agricultural production systems.

Identify and resolve zoonotic disease problems by on-farm research on agricultural animals.

Program Accomplishments

   
 
  • Defined the natural occurrence and shedding patterns of E. coli O157:H7 in cattle herds and in local and regional farm environments
  • First recognized Salmonella Typhimurium DT 104 as an emerging and zoonotic pathogen in the USA
  • Demonstrated contamination of feedstuffs and water sources as important factors in dissemination of zoonotic pathogens and normal flora with antimicrobial resistance
  • Selected as a Zoonosis Research Unit within the NIH Food and Waterborne Disease Integrated Research Network
  • Built solid collaborations among WSU research faculty, the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, and the Washington Department of Health to promote animal and public health
