Otoscopic Examination of the Dog & Cat 


This site demonstrates the instruments and techniques for examination of the ear canal of the dog and cat. The ear examination is demonstrated using a dog but all the comments apply to the cat as well.


Indications for an otoscopic exam include:

ear scratching/ rubbing
head shaking
ear odor
discharge, redness or swelling of the ear
hair loss around the ears

Types of ear problems encountered in dogs and cats include:

infection
foreign bodies
trauma to the ear flap
tumors inside the ear
tumors of the ear flap
aural hematoma
