When we first meet people, we don't know each other well enough to talk about profound subjects. Instead, we draw on certain established, safe, impersonal topics that we call "small talk". Your social skills will be judged by your facility with small talk, so don't ever disdain it as trivia or hypocrisy. Small talk is really important talk!!
