Expression
CD60b which was CDw60 is now divided into CD60a, CD60b, and CD60c.  CD60b is expressed on T lymphocyte subsets derived from peripheral blood and CD8+ subsets and CD4+ memory subsets but it is not detectable on naive CD45R0 T cells.  Recently it was found that CD34+ hematopoietic precursor cells are positive for CD60b.  It is expressed on activated B cells, neuroectodermal cells in the thymus epithelium and in the skin.  CD60b expression may correlate with CD4 Th2-type cytokine profile, some breast carcinomas and melanomas.

Structure
MOLECULAR FAMILY NAME: Belongs to the carbohydrate family.

CD60b mAbs recognize 9-O-acetylated disialosyl group (9-O-acetyl GD3) linked either to lactosyderamide or to its analogues with 1 or 2 lactosamine disaccharide units in their carbohydrate chains.

POST-TRANSLATIONAL MODIFICATION: No information.

Ligands
LIGANDS AND MOLECULES ASSOCIATED WITH CD60b: No information.

Function
The mAb UM-4D4 is immunoreactive with CD60b and has co-mitogenic activity on synovial  T lymphocytes.  While T cell activation by CD60a mAb R24 and by CD60c mAb U5 does not require co-stimulatory signals, CD60b mAb UM-4D4 points to a different signaling pathway.

BIOCHEMICAL ACTIVITY: No information.

DISEASE RELEVANCE AND FUNCTION OF CD60b IN INTACT ANIMAL

CD60b is a strong marker for malignant melanoma.  There is high frequency of CD60+ T cells in synovial fluid of normal and arthritic patients and in cutaneous psoriatic lesions.
