Expression
gp49 is present on mouse mast cells and their precursors.

Structure
gp49 is a single chain type 1 glycoprotein.  The extracellular region is comprised of 2 IgSF domains, followed by 1 hydrophobic transmembrane domain and 1 cytoplasmic domain.  The N-terminus of gp49A has been determined by protein sequencing.  gp49A and gp49B1 differ in an aa sequence by 9% except for an extra 32 residues at the C-terminal of gp49B1.  The cytoplasmic domain of gp49B1 contains an ITIM motif.  The 5.6 kb gene which encodes gp49B1 is alternatively spliced to produce gp49B2 which lacks a transmembrane region.

Function
The activation of bone marrow cultured mast cells by cross-linking of the FceRI or with a calcium ionophore or with PMA leads to phosphorylation of serine residues on gp49.
