|CD173 is expressed mainly on red cells, basal cells vascular and bronchial endothelium and erythrocytes. It is expressed in a wide variety of carcinomas and poorly differentiated type-2 cells of normal human mammary epithelium and erythrocytes. It is found that CD34+ leukemia cell lines, CD34+ myeloid precursor cell lines and naive CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells express CD173. In contrast, CD34- cell lines and mature lymphocytes lack CD173. |

CD173 is the monofucosylated form of the precursor carbohydrate chain belongs to the blood group H type-2 antigens and α1-2 Galβ1-4GlcNA is expressed on glycosphingolipids and glycoproteins on red cells. In carcinoma cells, epithelial mucins are the major carrier molecules. The expression is regulated by GDP-L-Fucose: b-D-Galactoside 2-a-L-Fucosyltransferase gene (FUT1). The carrier molecule of CD173 in CD34+ hematpoietic stem cells is a 170 kDa glycoprotein.

|CD173 is a biosynthetic precursor of the A and B antigens. CD173 function is unknown but since it is expressed in some carcinomas, it can be considered a carcinoma-associated antigen. CD173 is a specific marker of CD34+ hematopietic progenitor cells. Fucose is involved in the adhesion of hematopoietic progenitor cells and bone marrow stromal cells. The expression of CD173 by hematopoietic progenitors suggests a role in the homing proess of immature stem cells to bone marrow. Expression is upregulated in the fucosylated histo-blood group antigen CD173 in CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells and downregulated expression of these antigens is in mature lymphocytes.|
