|CD218a, formally CDw218a, is expressed on lymphocytes, neutrophils, monocytes, granulocytes, endothelial and NK cells. Expression is on subsets of B, T, myeloid and dendritic cells. Expression is in lung, leukocytes, spleen, liver, thymus, prostate, small intestine, gut, placenta, colon, and heart, and is absent from brain, skeletal muscle, pancreas and kidney. A high level of expression is found in Hodgkin's disease cell lines.|

CD218a and CD218b function together as the IL-18 receptor. CD218a is the ligand-binding chain.
|CD218a and CD218b binds IL-18 and mediates the activities of IL-18 through the activation of NF-κB. It is a proinflammatory cytokine that works in concert with IL-12 and promotes Th1 and Th2 immune responses and also induces IFN-γ production and activates NK cells. The protein encoded by CD218a is a cytokine receptor that belongs to the IL-1 receptor family but does not bind IL-1α or IL-1β. The receptor specifically binds IL-18 and is essential for IL-18 to mediate signal transduction. CD218a is a heterodimer consisting of a ligand-binding α chain, and is an associating β chain. IFN-α and IL-12 are reported to induce the expression of this receptor in NK and T cells. |
